It only takes a simple slip and fall to knock you off your feet for a few days or longer. When the snow starts falling, you should immediately think about what you can do to keep both yourself and your family safe. Icy spots can lead to falls that cause your spouse to break his or her arm and other injuries that can keep you out of work. Make sure that you know what to look for and what to do to keep your whole family safe this winter.

Check for Icicles

Icicles hang down from your roof and the top of your porch. While those icicles might look harmless, they can do some serious damage. One can come loose and hit you hard enough to cause a concussion. You should take the time to break those icicles off your roof. If the icicles keep coming back, consider installing heating cables on your roof. These cables work with any outdoor outlet and produce enough heat to melt any ice or snow in the surrounding area. Heat cables can also stop the freeze-thaw cycle that can damage your roof.

Lay Down Salt

It’s important that you lay down salt on any icy or slick surfaces outside your home. Buying from bulk rock salt suppliers ensures that you have plenty of salt on hand for the whole winter. When you buy in bulk, you don’t need to worry about rushing around to fine salt later in the season too. Put an even coating down on any ice or snow that you see. The salt will slowly melt those patches and reduce the risk of your family members slipping and falling. You can use salt on your porch, patio, sidewalk, walkway and even driveway.

Watch for Black Ice

Black ice is one of the most potentially dangerous problems that you can come across in the winter. Though it looks harmless, a patch of black ice can send your car into a spin and lead to a serious accident. Always keep your eyes firmly on the road, and make sure that there are no distractions in your car. If you do hit a patch of black ice, turn into the skid to reduce your risk of injury and to keep your car from spinning out. Knowing what to do and what to look for can keep your whole family safe this winter and beyond.
